Tensification and Aspiration: The Sounds That Are Never Written
νκ΅ is written with a plain γ± but pronounced with a tense one, and μ’λ€ is written with γ and γ· but comes out as γ . Both changes are regular, and neither is ever shown in the spelling.
By this point in the series a pattern should be visible: Korean spelling records what a word is made of, not how it comes out of a mouth. Nowhere is the gap wider than here.
Two changes account for most of it. A plain consonant can tighten into its tense counterpart, and a consonant next to γ can merge with it into an aspirated one. Neither is marked in writing, and both are completely predictable.
After a stop, plain becomes tense
This is the most common environment. When a syllable ends in one of the stop sounds [γ±], [γ·] or [γ ], a following plain consonant tightens.
The reason is mechanical. The final stop leaves your vocal tract already closed and tensed, and the next consonant inherits that tension.

After γ΄ and γ in verb stems
A second environment is narrower and catches learners out because it looks inconsistent from the outside.
When a verb or adjective stem ends in γ΄ or γ , an ending beginning with γ±, γ·, γ or γ tightens. μ κ³ is pronounced [μ κΌ¬], κ°λ€ is [κ°λ°], μκ³ is [μκΌ¬].
The narrowness matters. This is a rule about a verb or adjective stem meeting its ending, not about every γ΄ or γ that happens to precede a plain consonant.
After the future-modifier γΉ
When γΉ appears as a verb modifier ending β the form used before a noun to mean something like "that will" β the following consonant tightens.
ν κ² is pronounced [ν κ»], κ° λ° is [κ° λΌ], λ³Ό μ is [λ³Ό μ€]. Since κ², μ, λ° and λ appear constantly in ordinary sentences, this one is worth recognising early.
It is the grammatical modifier ending that triggers the change, not simply the presence of a γΉ.
In Sino-Korean words after γΉ
Within words of Chinese origin, a γΉ followed by γ·, γ or γ triggers tightening. λ°λ¬ is pronounced [λ°λΈ], μ λ is [μ λ], μΌμ is [μΌμ¨].
You do not need to identify which words are Sino-Korean to benefit from this. It is more useful as an explanation for pronunciations you have already heard than as a rule to apply while speaking.
γ merges instead of moving
γ behaves unlike any other consonant. Next to a plain stop it does not stay separate and does not disappear β it fuses with the stop to produce the aspirated version.
This works in both directions. A γ before the consonant and a γ after it produce the same result.

Tense and aspirated are not the same thing
It is easy to blur these two changes together because both make a consonant sound stronger to an untrained ear. They are opposite in one important respect.
Aspiration adds air. μ’λ€ comes out as [μ‘°ν], with a clear puff. Tensification removes air and adds muscular tension; λ¨Ήλ€ becomes [λ¨Ήλ°], which is tight and dry.
If you are unsure which one a word is doing, the paper test settles it. Hold a sheet in front of your mouth: [μ‘°ν] moves it, [λ¨Ήλ°] does not.
How to use all of this
These rules are worth reading once and then largely forgetting as rules. Their real value is in listening β they explain why a word you know sounds wrong, and that explanation is what lets your ear settle.
- β’When a word sounds tighter than it looks, check whether the previous syllable ends in a stop. That covers the majority of cases.
- β’When a word sounds breathier than it looks, look for a γ on either side.
- β’Practise νκ΅, κ°μ¬ν©λλ€, μ’λ€ and ν κ² deliberately, since each demonstrates a different rule and all four are extremely common.
- β’Do not try to write the changed pronunciation. Read the standard spelling and let the change happen as you speak.
