The Five Tense Consonants, and Why They Are Hard to Hear
ใฒ ใธ ใ ใ ใ look like doubled letters and are often described as "strong", which is misleading. Here is what your mouth actually does, and the word pairs that make the difference audible.
Reading the tense consonants takes about ten seconds. If you know ใฑ, you can read ใฒ. Hearing them is another matter, and it is where a lot of otherwise confident learners quietly stall.
Part of the problem is the vocabulary used to teach them. They get called "strong" or "double" consonants, which suggests more force and more air. What actually happens is closer to the opposite.
Three-way, not two-way
English splits stop consonants two ways: the p in "pin" and the b in "bin". Korean splits them three ways, and the third category has no English equivalent at all.
Take the lips. ใ is plain, ใ is aspirated with a strong puff of air, and ใ is tense. All three are voiceless at the start of a word, so the English b/p distinction does not map onto them cleanly. That mismatch is why the tense series feels invisible at first: your ear is listening for a contrast that is not the one being made.

What your throat is doing
A tense consonant is made with the vocal folds pressed together and the muscles of the throat tightened before the sound is released. The release itself is short, sharp, and dry โ noticeably less air escapes than with the plain version, not more.
The paper test from the consonant basics article shows this clearly. Hold a sheet in front of your mouth and say ํ, ๋ฐ, ๋น in turn. The paper jumps for ํ, moves slightly for ๋ฐ, and stays almost completely still for ๋น . If your ๋น is blowing the paper around, you are producing something closer to ใ .
A second cue many learners find easier: tense consonants raise the pitch of the following vowel slightly. You may hear the difference as a small jump upward before you can hear the consonant itself.
Word pairs worth memorising
Abstract description only goes so far. These pairs and triplets differ in exactly one feature, which makes them the fastest way to train your ear. Say each set out loud, slowly, and pay attention to how much air leaves your mouth.

Why ใ and ใ behave a little differently
ใ and ใ are the only pair in the system with no aspirated third member, because a fricative is already letting air through continuously. The contrast is therefore two-way rather than three-way.
The distinction shows up in the length and intensity of the hiss. ใ is longer, tighter, and often described as sounding more forceful, and it tends to shorten the vowel that follows. ์ฌ์ and ์ธ์ are a good pair to practise, since both come up constantly in shops.
Where tense sounds appear without being written
This is the part that surprises people. Korean often pronounces a plain consonant as tense when it follows certain final consonants, without changing the spelling at all.
ํ๊ต is written with ใฑ but pronounced closer to ํ๊พ. ์ ๊ตญ comes out nearer to ์ ๊พน. The rule is regular โ a plain stop after a stop-final syllable tightens โ and native speakers apply it without thinking.
For a learner this is good news in one direction and bad in the other. You do not need to memorise the tense pronunciation of individual words; you need to recognise the pattern. But it does mean that hearing a tense sound is not proof that a doubled letter was written.
A practice routine that actually moves the needle
Production and perception improve on different schedules, and mixing them in one session works better than drilling either alone.

- โขRecord yourself saying one triplet, wait a few hours, then listen back and try to identify which is which without looking.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are tense consonants louder than plain ones?
- Not really. They are shorter and tighter, with less escaping air. Learners who try to say them louder usually end up producing the aspirated version instead, which is the opposite of the intended sound.
Will people understand me if I cannot produce the difference yet?
- Usually yes, since context does a lot of work. But some pairs are genuinely ambiguous in isolation, ์ด and ์ among them, so it is worth training rather than skipping.
Is there a shortcut for hearing them?
- The most reliable one is pitch. The vowel after a tense consonant starts slightly higher. Many learners can hear that jump weeks before they can hear the consonant itself, and it is a legitimate cue to lean on in the meantime.
